Walmart Lays off 2,000 Warehouse Workers

Weeks after announcing it would have a challenging year, Walmart is firing more than 2,000 employees from five US facilities that process purchases from its website. Walmart is the largest private employer in the US. According to Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) documents, the retail behemoth is eliminating more than 1,000 positions in Texas, 600 in Pennsylvania, 400 in Florida, and 200 in New Jersey. The employment cuts were due to reductions and eliminations in evening and weekend shifts, according to Reuters’ initial story from last month.

In a statement, Walmart claimed that it had “recently altered personnel levels at our fulfillment facilities in key markets to better prepare for the future needs of consumers” and that the decision had “not been taken lightly.” It claimed to be “closely collaborating with affected Associates to assist them in understanding what career possibilities may be available at other Walmart locations.” It’s not yet apparent whether the layoffs that have been hurting many huge organizations are finally coming to an end or just getting started.
