UG security officers stopped students from addressing the press on campus.

A report by 3News claims that some students from the Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall started fighting, and chaos broke out at the University of Ghana, Legon.

According to the information in the report that was seen, the fight broke out when campus security tried to stop the students from having a joint press conference in protest of the administration’s recent decision to reevaluate the residential status of enrolled students in the two halls.

According to the University Security, which was later reinforced by officers from the Ghana Police Service, the students did not have permission to hold the news conference.

The students wanted to express their displeasure with the management’s decision, which was made public in a communique on December 14. The decision stipulates that no current male occupants of Mensa Sarbah Hall or the exclusive Commonwealth Hall will be permitted to return to their homes or any of the other halls.

According to the communiqué, “They are to be randomly assigned to available rooms in any of the UGEL and private hostels.”

This action won’t have an impact on current female students in Mensah Sarbah Hall or kids with special needs in either hall, it was said.

The University Council decided in response to frequent altercations involving students from the two halls, the most recent of which occurred on Friday, August 5.
