Shatta Wale’s explanations for declining to play at Hogbtsotso
Shatta Wale, a well-known dancehall performer from Ghana, has given his explanations for why he won’t be attending the 2022 Hogbetsotso festival. The festival’s 60th anniversary celebration was to be capped off by the concert on November 6, 2022.
The dancehall performer claimed in a video posted to his Facebook page that he was asked to participate in an interview at a radio station but turned it down since it was not covered under the contract between the event’s organizers and his management. “Where did this interview and greeting come from if I completed all the interviews you requested that I conduct in Accra? There were no introductions or interviews in the arrangement, “he explained.

He claimed that the organizers later told his team that if he declined the interview, they would not transport him to his hotel room. Having been disrespected, he subsequently made the decision not to perform. Additionally, he claimed that he was asked to meet the chiefs in order to pay respect to the Asantehene, Ga Mantse, and the Chief (Dufia) of Anlo who were in attendance at the festival. However, he declined because he believed it would exhaust him before his performance.
The dancehall performer was visibly upset as he queried why Ghanaian performers are often treated poorly but not foreign performers.
