Police kill 23-year-old Ghanaian after stabbing his parents
The man who was shot and killed by officers from the Frederick County sheriff’s office earlier this week has been identified by the office of Maryland’s attorney general.
At around 2:15 in the morning, Aaron Mensah, 23, was shot. Attorney General Brian Frosh’s office released a statement on Zoe Lane on Tuesday.
He was armed, according to the sheriff’s office, and they had been called to the scene when his sister called 911 to report that he was stabbing their parents.
Later, in a hospital, Mensah’s father passed away. His mother was transferred to a hospital where she is now receiving care.

Deputy First Class Cassy Boettcher, a deputy with the sheriff’s office for two and a half years, Deputy Travis Stely, a deputy with the agency since September and six years of law enforcement experience, and Deputy Nathan McLeroy, a deputy with the organization since July and three years of law enforcement experience, were the deputies involved in the shooting, according to Frosh.
After the stabbing, deputies and troopers from the Maryland State Police discovered Mensah with a knife, the sheriff’s office claimed on Tuesday night.
He was reportedly told to “drop the knife” by the officers who approached him before one of them shot him with a bean bag round from a shotgun.
Mensah then “rapidly moved toward the officer,” according to the attorney general’s office, after which several officers used stun guns and three officers opened fire on the man.
The investigation is being conducted by Frosh’s Independent Investigations Division. Other officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras, and their cameras captured some of what happened even though the deputies who fired their weapons weren’t.
Except in cases where it is determined to pose a challenge to the investigation, the video will be made public in 14 days.
