Over 2,000 Families To Lose Houses – To Save Weija Dam

Over 2,000 families in Gbawe Gonse, Greater Accra Region, are facing eviction following a demolition order from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

On October 9, 2023, houses were marked for demolition, leaving residents in confusion due to the lack of a specified demolition date.

Many residents fear the loss of their properties with no compensation or resettlement plan. This would be the second demolition in the area in 12 years, the previous one being in 2011.

While the GWCL cited the protection of the buffer zone of the Densu River as the reason for the first demolition, no clear reasons have been given for the current one. The affected residents are pleading for government intervention.
