Mother arrested for abandoning a 3-month-old baby
Police have arrested a 21-year-old woman who is accused of abandoning her three-month-old child in Beahu in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.
In the rural town of Beahu, Ama Tawiah is accused of abandoning the three-month-old infant on a walkway next to a bush roughly two days ago.
After perpetrating the alleged crime, the mother, who is not from the rural community, is said to have gotten into a car and driven away.
Sources claim that later that day, while searching for firewood in the bush, some women discovered a baby crying in a cloth while exposed to the hot sun. They hurried to save the child.
The baby was then turned over to the Department of Social Welfare after the situation was reported to the police.
The Social Welfare Department broadcast notifications about the infant and the need for the mother to come in to the office on a few radio stations.
Later, Ama Tawiah came forward to claim her child.
According to reports, she admitted to abandoning the child and said the father wouldn’t accept her pregnancy or her inability to care for the child as reasons.
Police have taken her into custody as they investigate to see if Ama Tawiah is really the mother of the child.
