Lionel Messi set to leave PSG this summer

Unless he agrees to a hefty wage reduction, Lionel Messi is reportedly planning to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

On June 30, Messi’s current PSG contract will end; the club and Argentine star have not yet reached an agreement over an extension. The 35-year-old was considering staying at Parc des Princes for a longer period of time after the World Cup, but things have changed recently, according to L’Equipe. Messi is currently on the verge of leaving PSG because the club will only keep him if he agrees to accept a large pay cut from his present level.

Messi presently makes around €3 million a month at PSG, which places him third on the club’s list of top earners after colleagues Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, according to a report last week from the same outlet. According to GOAL, PSG is having trouble following the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and will have to approximately 30% down their payroll to keep Messi for another season.

Before considering a new contract, Messi is reportedly also looking for assurances regarding PSG’s project. The two parties are reportedly at odds in their current negotiations. Messi has plenty of alternatives as Barcelona has expressed interest in bringing him back to Camp Nou, while Inter Miami of the MLS and Al-Hilal of the Saudi Premier League are also rumored to be interested in signing him.
