Joseph Paintsil: Overcoming Disappointment and Resilient Return to the Black Stars
Joseph Paintsil expressed his deep sense of disappointment upon learning that he had been left out of the final squad for the highly anticipated 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
As a talented winger representing KRC Genk, he had initially received the exciting news of being named in Ghana’s 55-man provisional squad, which fueled his aspirations of representing his country on the grandest stage of international football.
However, his dreams were shattered when the final 26-man squad was announced, and his name was conspicuously absent from the list.

The decision to exclude him from the squad had been made by the then-head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, and it left Paintsil feeling disheartened and disenchanted.
In spite of his disappointment, Paintsil chose not to harbor any ill feelings towards the Ghana Football Association (GFA). He recognized that their decision-making process was likely complex and influenced by various factors.
Instead, his disappointment was primarily directed towards Otto Addo, the coach who had deemed him unfit for the World Cup squad.
Paintsil believed that he had deserved a place in the final squad, emphasizing that there was no valid reason for his exclusion. His performance on the field, coupled with his contributions to KRC Genk, had made him a standout player, and he had hoped to showcase his abilities and represent his nation on the global stage.
Nonetheless, the setback did not deter Paintsil’s determination to excel in his career. He continued to work hard and make a strong case for his inclusion in future national team selections.
His opportunity for redemption eventually arrived when he made a triumphant return to the Black Stars squad during the qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a match against Angola, Paintsil displayed his resilience and skill by providing a crucial assist that resulted in Ghana’s equalizing goal.
This successful comeback showcased his talent and reinforced his value as a player. It also brought him a sense of personal satisfaction, as he had proven his worth to both his teammates and the coaching staff.
