Azumah-Nelson

It’s disrespectful to name Kaneshie Sports Complex after Azumah Nelson – Karl Tufuoh

Tufuoh, a lecturer, expressed his strong disapproval regarding the neglect of the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, which has become overgrown with weeds.

He believes that Nelson, the country’s greatest sportsman and a highly respected figure even among his opponents, deserves a more suitable honor.

Tufuoh criticized the decision to name a less significant building after such a renowned sports icon and suggested that the Legon Stadium would be a more appropriate choice.

The expansion of the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex into a youth and sports resource center began in 2018 but has faced significant delays and little progress.

The estimated worth of the project was $4 million when it started, but due to the contractor abandoning the project in October 2020 due to unpaid dues from the Sports Ministry, it has been left in an abandoned state.

Azumah Nelson, known for his achievements in the 1980s and 1990s as the holder of WBC featherweight and super featherweight titles, is considered one of Africa’s greatest boxers.

With an impressive record of 39 wins, 2 draws, and 6 losses in 47 bouts, he has rightfully earned his place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York.
