I decided to leave politics – Mahama
John Dramani Mahama, a former president of the Republic of Ghana, has discussed his transformative experience becoming a politician.
The former politician claimed that after serving as a minister and a member of parliament for three terms in a row, he decided to leave politics to pursue a career as a lecturer.
The NDC potential flagbearer claimed that destiny would have carried him into a higher rank of his lecturing career, but he received a divine calling to serve his country in the higher office of vice president and later as president of the country. He was speaking at the 13th Graduation Ceremony at the Accra Business School under the theme; “creating jobs in the Ghanaian economy, challenges and opportunities.”

‘Not many people are aware of this story of my life, but standing before you as though in a lecture hall, takes me back to this memory, many years ago, after serving for three terms as a member of parliament and minister, I made the decision to leave politics and pursue a doctorate degree, with the intention of returning to teach in a university that had just been established in Ghana.
The hand of destiny intervened and I received the calling to serve my country in the higher office as vice president and later, as faith will have it, as president of this great nation, he said. “I believe that, this life’s choices would have put me in the ranks of your hardworking lectures here in shaping, impacting, and sharing knowledge with young people like you.
From January 2009 to July 2012, he was Ghana’s vice president.
From 1997 to 2009, he represented Bole Bamboi in the legislature. During the previous NDC administration, he also held the positions of deputy and minister of communication.
