AyirebiSHS: Students Complain About Poor Learning Environment as Classrooms and Dining Hall Are Made Dormitories

Ayirebi Senior High School, situated in the Ofoase Ayirebi Constituency of the Eastern region, is currently facing a dire situation when it comes to its infrastructure.

Established in 1992, the school has unfortunately not undergone any significant improvements or expansions since its inception.

As a result, the limited facilities available are struggling to meet the growing demands brought about by the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy.

One of the most pressing issues faced by the school is the acute shortage of accommodation facilities.

With the exponential increase in the student population, the existing dormitories are unable to cater to the rising numbers.

Consequently, school authorities have resorted to converting classrooms into makeshift dormitories to accommodate the students.

This situation not only compromises the learning environment but also puts additional strain on the already limited classroom space.

Moreover, the school relies on a pavilion structure to serve as both the dining hall and assembly hall.

However, due to the lack of adequate classrooms, a portion of this pavilion has been partitioned to create additional learning spaces for first-year students.

This makeshift arrangement further highlights the infrastructure challenges faced by Ayirebi Senior High School.

The water supply situation at the school is equally problematic. Currently, the entire student body, comprising over a thousand students, relies on a single borehole for their water needs.

This issue has been exacerbated by the fact that the management has failed to repair a damaged borehole dedicated to the boys’ dormitory for several months.

As a result, students are forced to endure long queues every day to fetch water, leading to delays and disruptions in their daily routines, including punctuality to class.

The inadequate sanitary conditions within the school have also come to the forefront.

Female students, in particular, have expressed their concerns about the deplorable state of the toilet facilities.

The lack of proper maintenance and hygiene has resulted in a rise in vaginal infections among the students.

This not only affects their physical well-being but also adds to their discomfort and hampers their ability to focus on their studies.

Furthermore, the overcrowded classrooms pose additional challenges to the students.

With insufficient desks available, multiple students are often forced to share a single desk, making it difficult for them to sit comfortably and concentrate on their lessons.

The learning environment is further compromised by the inadequate lighting and ventilation in some of the classrooms, hindering the students’ ability to learn effectively.

In terms of dining, the quality of food provided to the students is a cause for concern.

Many students have expressed dissatisfaction with the monotonous menu and the lack of variety in the meals.

This not only affects their nutritional intake but also dampens their enthusiasm for school activities.
