Asiedu Nketiah wanted to be Mahama’s running mate – Amb Victor Smith

Asiedu Nketiah wanted to be Mahama’s running mate – Amb Victor Smith

Former Special Assistant to Ex-President Rawlings and former High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland, Ambassador Victor Smith, has claimed that Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), wanted to be John Dramani Mahama’s running partner in the 2020 elections.

According to the top NDC member, Asiedu Nketiah’s rejection by Mahama left him (Nketiah) resentful, which is what drove him to run for the party leadership.

In an interview with Ahotor FM that GhanaWeb listened to, Amb. Smith claimed that he and other senior party figures, including former President Mahama, had advised Asiedu Nketiah not to challenge Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo for the chairmanship position because doing so might cause needless conflict, but that Nketiah had refused to heed their advice.

“He intended to run as my running mate in 2020. Like I mentioned, JM (John Dramani Mahama) had various views after consulting with the leaders. If this is untrue, please send someone to inform me.

“I warned the General Secretary that he was going to cause issues in the party when he called me one evening and said he wanted to run for the party leadership job. The general secretary, though, claimed to have made up his mind.

“I warned him that his action might cause some secrets to be revealed, but he did not pay attention. He was encouraged not to run for office by John Dramani Mahama and the party leaders, but he insisted that he had already made up his mind and that democracy applied.

The party’s national elections are scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 17, 2022.

However, the election for the roles of women’s and youth organizers is scheduled for Saturday, December 10.

The National Chairman, National Vice-Chairmen, General Secretary, Deputy General Secretary, National Organiser, and Deputy National Organiser, as well as the National Treasurer and Deputy National Treasurer, are among the posts for which candidates will run.

The National Women’s Organiser and Deputy, the National Zongo Caucus Coordinator, the National Communications Officer and Deputy, and the National Youth Organiser and Deputy are additional members.

For the position of National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the party’s departing General Secretary, is anticipated to be a fierce competitor for Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.
