Akonta Mining is not engaged in illegal mining, says Akufo-Addo
President Nana Akufo-Addo stated on Wednesday that Akonta Mining Ltd., controlled by the Ashanti regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is not involved in “any unlawful mining anywhere in Ghana” (4 January 2023).
In an effort to combat the problem, Akufo-Addo said that the government has so far roped off 294 illegal mining locations around the nation.
Akufo-Addo declared that the government is dedicated to winning the battle against illegal mining while addressing the 28th national and 16th biennial National Union of Ghana Catholic Diocesan Priest Association (NUGCDPA) in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
The president stated, “I want to reassure the chairperson and all of you that Akonta Mining Ltd is not now engaged in any unlawful mining anywhere in Ghana.

“Furthermore, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has made an attempt to cordon off all 294 locations of the country’s forest reserves and remove all unlawful mining from them as we speak, working with the Forestry Commission and the military for support.
“We’ll keep working to make sure this scenario doesn’t change. No matter the cost, this government is committed to defeating galamsey, according to Akufo-Addo.
Halt operations
In September of last year, Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, gave the Forestry Commissions the order to stop Akonta Mining Limited’s operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
Concerns about unlawful mining in the forest reserve have been voiced by civil society organizations like Arocha Ghana, which is why the directive was issued.
The company does not have the necessary mineral rights to conduct mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on Friday (30 September).
“Publications concerning some operations by Akonta Mining Ltd in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Amenfi West Municipality in the Western Region have attracted the attention of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.”
The corporation does not have any mineral rights to conduct any mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, according to records made accessible to the ministry, despite having a mining license to do so in some areas of Samreboi outside the forest reserve.
